PROPANE FORKLIFTS
>>SAFETY
Propane fuel burns cleanly, with very low emissions from combustion and no evaporative emissions, so propane forklifts are safe for indoor and outdoor operations.

As with all forklifts, however, certain steps can be taken to ensure continued safe operation:
  • Adequate ventilation of enclosed facilities
  • Safe handling of the fuel
  • Proper maintenance of the forklift
  • Employee training
Numerous resources are available to assist propane forklift operators with the safe operation and maintenance of their equipment. They include the following:
  • Local Propane Dealers: See Yellow Pages under "Gases-," "Gas - Propane", "Propane Gas", or "Propane Gas - Equipment & Suppliers," in the local phone directory.
  • OSHA: Website: http://www.osha.gov/SLTC/poweredindustrialtrucks/standards.html
  • OSHA Office of Training and Education: Outreach training materials for the Powered Industrial Truck Operator Training Standard.
  • National Ag Safety Database (NASD): Several videos including Training Videos - Forklifts and Pallet Jacks.
  • State Organizations: State propane associations and the Railroad Commission of Texas Alternative Fuel Research and Education Division (http://www.rrc.state.tx.us) offer information and classes on such topics as propane safety, vehicle equipment and devices, and vehicle diagnostics and repair. • Industry Organizations: The Propane Education Research Council (http://www.propanecouncil.org/), National Propane Gas Association (http://www.npga.org), and the Propane Vehicle Council (http://www.propanevehicle.org/), all constitute valuable sources for obtaining information on employee training and materials, such as the Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) on propane.
  • Private Organizations: Forklift Operation and Safety, an online private operator training course, one of several OSHA training topics provided free of charge.
